PROGRAMME:

9:00

Meeting in Maribor, in front of the Tourist Information Centre at 9:00 am. Meeting with the guide, summary of the daily program.

Maribor is the second largest city in Slovenia and the centre of the Municipality of Maribor. It is a university and metropolitan city and the economic, financial, administrative, educational, cultural, commercial and tourist center of northeastern Slovenia. Maribor was the European Capital of Culture in 2012 and the European Youth Capital in 2013. In 2012, it also hosted the European Youth Chess Championship. The town developed along the Drava River, below the castle. The first mention of the castle dates back to 1164. The castle was called Marchburg, which in translation means the castle in Marka (Marka was a border county). The castle stood on the hill of the Pyramid, just above the city.

The settlement did not form under the fortress itself; firstly because of the dock under the castle and secondly because of the heavily swampy southwestern area. The settlement was formed along today’s Koroška cesta, ending in today’s Glavni trg, where two important routes from Koroška to Ptuj and from Ljubljana to Graz met. The first mention of the settlement of Maribor is from 1204. The square next to the castle is mentioned. In 1254, the square was granted city rights. With the victory of Rudolf of Habsburg over Otokar II. in 1278 the town began to develop rapidly. Maribor defied the siege of Matthias Corvinus in 1480 and 1481 and the siege of the Ottoman Empire in 1532 and 1683.

The city remained under the rule of the Habsburg Monarchy until 1918.

Today, the city has a number of institutions of national importance. The University of Maribor, the Institute of Information Sciences – IZUM, Nova KBM, Zavarovalnica Maribor, SNG Maribor, the University Clinical Center Maribor and the Archdiocese of Maribor are based here. National institutions such as Pošta Slovenije, the Slovenian Enterprise Fund, the Public Energy Agency of the Republic of Slovenia and the Railway Transport Agency are also based in the city.

Maribor is the center of Slovenian Styria and the seat of the Podravska region and the eastern cohesion region with a very favorable position at the crossroads of important European routes, along the Drava River, between Pohorje, Kozjak and Slovenske gorice, between the Drava Valley and the Drava plain.

9:10 – 10:00

Drive through the border Zgornja Kungota towards Plački vrh and hike to the lookout tower on Plački stolp (panorama of Slovenske Gorice). A great opportunity to take photos and enjoy, as the locals say, “the most beautiful view in the Slovenian hills”.

Plački vrh is a 510m high hill and is located north of Zgornja Kungota or west of Šentilj. The lookout tower at the top is 28m high. From it there is a beautiful view far to Austria, to Prekmurje and even to the Croatian border.

10:30 – 12:30

The path to the famous heart-shaped wine road, a view of the surroundings and a tasting of selected wines with snacks at the Excursion Farm directly on the spot.

The heart among the vineyards is currently one of the most famous Slovenian sights – also because many people own it. We will visit the Dreisiebner tourist farm (triple seven) from where the heart-shaped road can be seen. The heart among the vineyards on Špičnik has recently attracted a lot of attention for several reasons – for example, because a member of the star duo 2Cellos got married there, and because the French advertised their vineyards with him.

15:00 – 17:00

Visit the Kebl Wine Museum nearby.

The Kebl Wine Museum is located in the middle of the Svečinske gorice wine-growing district in Slatina, right on the border with Austria, in the municipality of Kungota. KEBL is the name of a hill – a hill, at the top of which is an old cimprača, mysteriously surrounded by forest. Only on one side the world is open to view the distant forests of Kozjak and the nearby vineyards below. An Austrian wine road flickers through the branches on the north side. So they are right next to a busy wine road, but the ambience of the old house and its surroundings offers them a feeling of loneliness and remoteness in another ancient time and place. The 200-year-old renovated winery, managed by TD Svečina, carries different messages. With its ethnological collection, which conjures up the life of a winegrower and winemaker a few centuries ago, it is an opportunity to acquire new knowledge about their past for old and young.

17:30 – 20:00

A tour of the Leber wine estate and a tasting of their products wrapped in a story about the effort, desire and success of the farm. This is followed by dinner prepared from local delicacies.

20:00 – …

Departure back to Maribor and end of the programme
